a brief history
Here's the dirt. All this stuff you ever wanted to know. Stuff our mom's don't know.
Spilling Poetry started in 1994. Actually Brian , Lynn & Jamie were in a band called
"Bone Flower Elegy" before that. And before THAT, Brian and Lynn played together
in high school.
So, when the bass player left Bone Flower, Ryan hopped aboard and they became Spilling
Poetry.
They recorded "Invisible" in the Spring of '94 and released it a few months
later.
Like every first, self-recorded, self-produced record, "Invisible" had it's
flaws. The resulting product, however, was a collection of sometimes dark, sometimes poppy
songs with introspective lyrics and some damn BRAINS.
The band sold out of 1000 CDs in a few months, and continued to play regionally.
Long about 1996, they headed back to the studio to record an EP which eventually became
"Microphonic". The song "South Central" got some airplay nationally,
landed itself on a compilation and the band sold another 1000 copies of
"Microphonic".
In the summer of 1996 Jamie decided to leave the band, amicably, might I add, and Michael
picked up the guitar.
So, we started really playing out. Time had come to get the hell out of our own backyard
and get beat up a little
All of '96 through '97 was spent PLAYING. We played anywhere and everywhere. From the
worst two-people-in-attendance shows in Crapola, New Mexico to opening spots for a slew of
big acts.
Which brings us to the end of 1997.
We started the next project "Telepthetic" in the same way we'd done the previous
two releases.
Alone.
About a quarter of the way through the recording, we met some real cool people.
Namely, our future manager Traci Parsons and then Tim Kimsey ( or Kim Timsey, depending on
your sass factor )
So, Traci started booking the band ( for which we were VERY grateful ) and Tim said he'd
help us record the rest of "Telepathetic" and even mix it!
( there was much rejoicing )
So, with the help of Tim and Traci, alot of Josta and a failed attempt to all quit
smoking, we finished recording and mixing "Telepathetic" at Dallas Sound Labs.
March of 1998 saw the release of "Telepathetic"
Then, Spilling Poetry got real brave and played the East Coast for two weeks.
There was much van-sleeping and PB&J eating. We even took our friend Doug.
So, we continued to play, and in the beginning of 1999 Brian & Michael decided to
start a studio.
So, they recorded some other bands, made enough money to buy some decent gear, and they
all started the next Spilling Poetry album.
Then, Scott joined and said he'd play some acoustic guitar, sing some backups, and he even
bought an organ!
Which brings us up to the present.
We're working on the next record.
We'll continue to play, sell CDs and meet amazing people everywhere.
Sure, we left out some of the ugly details and some of the super-cool stuff that we did,
but it all just kept boiling down to us being really good friends, having alot of fun, and
writing, playing, and recording songs that meant something to us all.
A little sappy?
Maybe, but hey, that's just us.
see ya at the show
